2012 READERCON FILIPINO FRIDAY (2): School of Reading

This week’s topic:

“School of Reading. We all started reading somewhere, and more often than not, we were influenced by someone. Who got you into reading? Your parents? A friend? A librarian? One teacher who always lends out his/her books? How helpful was your school in helping your reading habit / fueling your book addiction?”

Who got you into reading?

This is a very easy question to answer: MY MOTHER! Nanay is a college literature teacher and she was the one who influenced my love for fiction. She bought me picture books and Bible story books, she chose Nido as our milk because of the attached fairy tale booklets that came with the boxes, she rented Nancy Drew books for me, she brought me to our school library and introduced me to the librarian…ah, the list can go on but you get the picture.

In school, I made good friends with book lovers too. We often frequent the library and it even came to a point that we got to finish all of the fiction books in our elementary library, so we ventured out and visited the high school/college library and eventually made it as our hang out! How dorky, no? But I had lots of fun, being surrounded with lots and lots of books and cute high school/college boys. HAHA.

I didn’t have a teacher who lends out books to students, but every time I see a teacher reading a novel, I feel a rush of warm feeling, like having a kindred spirit even if I’m not that close to the teacher.

How helpful was your school in helping your reading habit / fueling your book addiction?

For pretty much of my elementary and high school days, sad to say, my school wasn’t a major influence/motivator when it came to my reading habits. Our library did not have any contemporary fiction books, and our textbook in our Reading subject was mediocre. If not for my mother, and my equally bookish friends, I wouldn’t have been that much into reading at that age. The university that I went to in college was actually the one that fueled my passion for reading, and as what I’ve said in this blog post, it was in college when I discovered John Grisham and Dean Koontz.
